Do a 15-minute sweep before your Ride Again pickup. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, loose personal items, and anything valuable. Check under seats, the trunk, visors, seat-back pockets, center console, and spare-tire well.
Factory-reset the infotainment system so Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink, and saved addresses are gone. Leave the keys and signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove Security Items First
Start with anything that can open a building or identify where you live. Pull the garage-door remote, gate clicker, spare house keys, storage-unit keys, and workplace access cards. Check the visor, cup holders, center console, door pockets, and key ring. If a remote is built into the mirror or infotainment system, clear it during the electronics step.
Stop Billing Items Next
Remove the toll transponder, parking pass, prepaid fuel card, campus sticker, apartment garage pass, and any disability placard that belongs to a person, not the car. Then log in to the toll account and remove the donated vehicle from the account. Pulling the tag is not always enough to stop future billing.
Pull Personal Documents From Glovebox
Take out the insurance card, registration receipt, repair invoices, inspection papers, owner notes, financing letters, and anything with your address or account numbers. Keep maintenance records only if you want them for your files. Do not leave bank paperwork, medical paperwork, passwords, or copies of IDs in the glovebox or console.
Check Cabin And Trunk
Do the full sweep in a set pattern. Start at the driver seat, then move clockwise through the car. Look under every seat, between seat cushions, inside seat-back pockets, inside the center console, under floor mats, in door pockets, above visors, and in cup holders. Finish in the trunk, cargo side panels, tool kit area, and spare-tire well.
Erase Stored Vehicle Data
Factory-reset the infotainment system if the screen allows it. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call history, saved contacts, garage-door HomeLink settings, navigation favorites, saved home address, Wi-Fi settings, and app logins. If the battery is dead or the system will not power on, remove what you can and tell Ride Again what remains.
Remove Optional Aftermarket Items
You may remove add-ons you own, such as a dash cam, phone mount, upgraded stereo faceplate, portable GPS, roof rack accessories, or child seats. Do not strip parts needed for safe loading or change the vehicle from how you described it. Leave the car intact, rollable if possible, and ready for the tow truck.
Leave Pickup Items Behind
Leave the keys with the car, including the main key, fob, and any locking-wheel key if you have it. Leave the signed-over title with the car as directed for your donation. Put these items in the agreed place only after your personal sweep is complete, so they do not get mixed with papers you mean to keep.
Paperwork Boundaries Before Pickup
Do not use the car as storage once it is assigned for free pickup. If paperwork rules are unclear, keep personal records with you and ask the Texas DMV whether any specific item must stay with the vehicle. Common questions
Do I remove my toll tag if I already canceled insurance?
Yes. Insurance status does not close a toll account. Remove the physical transponder and remove the vehicle from the account online or by calling the toll provider. This helps prevent tolls, parking charges, or account notices from being tied to a car you no longer control.
Can I keep my dash cam, stereo, or child seat?
Yes, if the item is yours and it can be removed without damaging the vehicle or changing what you reported. Take dash cams, child seats, portable GPS units, phone mounts, and removable stereo faceplates. Leave installed safety equipment, factory parts, and anything needed to load the car.
What if I cannot factory-reset the infotainment system?
Remove data manually if you can. Delete phones, contacts, navigation favorites, saved addresses, and garage-door settings one by one. If the battery is dead or the screen will not turn on, remove any connected devices and let Ride Again know the system could not be cleared.
